//// the blessed martyr from the drawing board ////
released 28th march 2016

//// fyrste rom, by sara olivia berntsen ////

//// organ themes for winter, by mariell øyre

from fivrel ep:

//// fyrste rom ////
the first piece i composed for fivrel, fyrste rom (the first room) is essentially a impressionistic capture of my living room back in lærdal and my feelings concering it. i had no microphones with me, so the piano, flutes and the ambient noises are recorded directly into my macbook’s mic, the rest is recorded from the old home organ in my room.

//// kyrie ////
driven by a tender vocal sample, kyrie is perhaps the most serious piece in the fivrel catalogue – at least the first part of it anyway. the recordings are all done at the old house in my farm, where my girlfriend and i lived with a couple of friends last summer. we spoke about all kinds of things and i recorded without them knowing. thematically, the song is all about “hanging in there” because something good eventually will turn up.

/// andre rom ////
andre rom (the second room) is written and recorded in our flat in grünerløkka, oslo. there is a lot of curiosities to this track, for example that the rumbling noise – often mistaken for thunder – actually is the sound of our small table fan, and that the first melody is played on a toy melodica my girlfriend got me from a flee market. the main riff is, like fyrste rom’s heavily influenced by the energetic music of bach and steve reich, two of my favourite classical composers.

//// stig! ////
i composed stig! (rise!) for my girlfriend who needed a little lift in the fall of 2010. the main theme is composed by reversing a piano recording i had done a couple of days earlier. the second theme was made by stacking a couple of similar piano riffs on top of each other. the girl who talks in the end is heidi, she is very sweet and talks to her best friend about boys and how they are going to lie in bed an listen to music when she gets home.

to find out how it sounded when i recorded my happy drunk friends who just happened to drop by for pizza and a chat, what melodies turn up in my mind when i hear the sound of my girlfriend sleeping and much more – all you need to do is buy the album!
